The Society for Thermal Medicine will sponsor a workshop on April 5, 2006 at the Bethesda Marriott Hotel on "Translational Thermal Biology Related to Cancer & Practical Aspects of Clinical Hyperthermia" that will precede the Annual Meeting of the Society for Thermal Medicine (April 6-8, 2006).  This workshop will follow up on the highly successful workshop presented last year that was directed toward molecular and mechanistic aspects of the host thermal response.

The 2006 Workshop will present key aspects of this field from a more translational/clinical perspective as well as to acquaint the audience with practical aspects of some hyperthermia treatment modalities and therapies that involve heat shock protein modulation. The overall goal is to follow-up on the recent excitement surrounding the completion of successful clinical trials using hyperthermia or heat shock proteins and to:

1)  identify barriers that exist in the further development of new clinical trial strategies that can be shared by several cancer centers and

2) identify common immunological effects resulting from various hyperthermia protocols.

Experts in this field will lead discussion designed to be of interest to physicians and laboratory/ industry scientists interested in new developments in the use of hyperthermia and/or heat shock proteins for cancer treatment.  Topics will include a discussion of heat shock proteins in the context of cancer therapy and the innovative uses of hyperthermia, including combination with liposomes, chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy, and will highlight clinical programs using high temperature, thermal ablation protocols.   There will also be a presentation of practical aspects of equipment, physics and protocols utilized for various hyperthermia protocols.

All investigators working in this field or are interested in learning more about hyperthermia/thermal stress biology are encouraged to register for the workshop.

There is no workshop registration fee for NIH staff or trainees.  For more information, please contact:
